Children and Youth Class Descriptions

Broadway Babies spend six weeks exploring the art of storytelling through theater.  They learn to work as an ensemble as they bring a story and characters to life while at the same time learning theater basics like stage directions.  They are required to memorize a small number of lines for the final performance on the last day of class.  Costumes, hats, and masks are used as required by the story.

Budding Actors spend two hours per week for six weeks rehearsing and exploring characters and acting techniques.  They help to make a set and props for their play, a classic fairy tale or children’s story from around the world.

Junior Play Production offers students two classes per week for six weeks during which they agree on a type of play to perform, audition for roles, experience the rehearsal process from beginning to end, design and create their sets and props, and consider costuming and makeup choices.  Performance for family and friends is on the last day of class.

Homeschool Players meet for 90 minutes twice a week for six weeks.  They agree on a type of play to perform, audition for roles, explore character and acting techniques, experience the rehearsal process from beginning to end, design and create sets and props, engineer sound and lighting effects, and make costuming and makeup choices.  Performance for family and friends is on the last day of class.

Senior Play Production students meet for 90 minutes twice a week for six weeks.  They agree on a type of play to perform (comedy, drama, musical, classical, melodrama, Greek, etc), audition for roles, explore character and acting techniques, experience the rehearsal process from beginning to end, design and create sets and props, engineer sound and lighting effects, and make costuming and makeup choices.  Performance for family and friends is on the last day of class.

Spring Break campers have daily lessons in singing, dancing, and acting and apply these lessons to the performance of a theater piece that includes all three on Friday afternoon.  Students may write their own script or work from a published text.

Beginning Acting Workshop is an on-going class where students begin the serious study of acting technique.  Students are lead through exercises to develop voice, speech, and movement skills.  Acting exercises focus on the development of character, imagination, and the center of truth.  Students memorize monologues and perform improvisations in the pursuit of these skills.  Students should expect to spend a minimum of three sessions in Beginning Workshop before stepping up to Intermediate Workshop.

Intermediate Acting Workshop in an on-going class where students build on the skills mastered in Beginning Acting Workshop.  Students continue to develop their physical instrument; proficiency in the development of character is assumed.  Students are introduced to the methods most useful in playing against other actors in a realistic and truthful way.  Students perform exercises and memorize and explore scenes with partners but may also choose to continue to work on monologues. Students progress through successively more challenging scene work from session to session.
